Gourds and Feng Shui
Gourds and Feng Shui... it only makes sense. According to this article in the Times of India, a gourd in a room's decor brings about healing and longevity, as well as harmony within a relationship.

Maté Gourd + Tea = Financial Reward
In 2005 three friends visited Argentina, and returned to New York with a business plan. They were impressed enough with the tradition of drinking Maté tea (using a gourd bowl, or Maté) that they formed Bombilla Gourd Maté Tea, which is available as a beverage in stores in the Eastern United States (and soon in the West). >> Full article in AMNY.com (Newsday).
Three college students, no business plan, a tea drink from a foreign country, released only in February this year... and projected sales of $1.5 million by this time next year. Crazy.

Background Gourds
In case anyone is curious about the gourds shown in the background... these are the work of Kat Williams (my wife and fellow gourdblogger). Kat is a self-confessed Halloween addict (her favorite season) who decorated these fine fellows with old-style Halloween icons. If you recall the 2003 Fall issue of the Gourdvine magazine, you'll remember Kat's Halloween lampshade on the front cover (with tutorial inside).

Native American Powwow Calendar
There are a great many Powwow's throughout the country, where one can see and experience Native American exhibits, traditional dancing, and much more. The gourd makes a regular appearance as either a craft item, utensil, or subject of celebration (e.g. the Gourd Dance). Of course, many native crafts are on sale, from finished pieces to supplies and materials.
The Crazy Crow Trading Post website lists many various Powwow's going on throughout the country. For example, the 14th Annual Frank Liske Park Powwow in Concord, North Carolina takes place August 3-4.
There are many such events listed, many more than can be listed here... for the nearest upcoming Powwow in your area, remember to bookmark the Crazy Crow Events page.

Picking up a little steam...
The GourdBlog is gathering a little steam, almost 200 views since the counter was installed (starting at 50). The word is being sent out about the Blog, and the plan will be to establish it as one of the main sites to seek out when looking for news and items of interest about Gourds.
A few things have been realized in these few short days... (1) there's more news than I anticipated, and I think there's more to be discovered, and (2) there are so many craft shows of all kinds going on constantly, that just covering that alone would be a full-time job. This means, of course, that the world of crafting is as HUGE as it's ever been, and growing -- and, that Gourds are becoming more common among all crafts out there. This is great news!
Thanks for looking and sharing... and feel free to comment! It's free to do so... nothing to pay, nothing to sign up for.

The Delphos Herald online reports on the upcoming Ohio Gourd Show, September 29-30, in Greenville, Ohio.
According to the story, this will be the 445th Ohio Gourd Show. Which places the 1st Annual Gourd Show back in 1562, before there was a Greenville, or even an Ohio!

Folsom Gourd Art Festival and Classes
The Folsom Gourd & Arts Festival is coming soon... the last weekend of September each year. This year's dates are the 29th and 30th.
While Zittel's Gourd Farm is in Folsom, the Festival is actually held at the City Park, a few blocks (and a river) away. We were at this event back in 2003 when the magazine was still alive, and it was a great show then. And we were honored to meet Ginger Summit at the show.
The show's website is here... Volunteers are needed!
On the Thursday and Friday before the show (27 & 28), Folsom Gourd Arts will hold classes. You can view the class schedule here.
Map for the Show (below). The RED arrow shows the Festival location (City Park). Zittel Farms is located at the corner of Oak Ave. and Folsom-Auburn Rd. (BLUE arrow), across from the McDonald's.

Tracing the Steps of the Bottle Gourd
Dominique Goerlitz, a lecturer, is about to set sail eastward from New York in a boat built from reeds, to test the theory that the ancients made it back across the Atlantic from the New World.
His inspiration? A lowly bottle gourd.
"For more than a decade, he has bugged his professors about how the bottle gourd, which was essential for the development of irrigation and agriculture across a world that had not yet discovered pottery, managed to spring as a full-blown domesticated plant within a relatively short time in Asia, the Americas and Africa.
"The standard answer was that the seed was first domesticated in one place, and then floated to the other places.
"I asked my botany professor, and he shrugged his shoulders," Goerlitz said. "'We assume it got there under its own power,' I was told. 'Ask the archaeologists'."
"The archaeologists didn't know either, and they sent Goerlitz to the ethnologists, who also didn't know."
